past-cast-1400x1400In the fall of 2014, I got back into listening to podcasts. It had been years since I regularly listened to any, and I was amazed by the amount of quality shows on subjects of every kind. When podcasts first started, I had done a show with a good friend. We used it to talk about comic books and the culture surrounding them. With podcast listening becoming a habit again, I began to get an itch to create another show. Around the same time, I read Blake J Harris’ excellent book, Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle that Defined a Generation. The battle between Sega and Nintendo brought back many memories from my childhood. The book taught me some new things, but the power of reminiscing about my past was the true draw. With that on my mind, I decided on a theme for the new podcast, found a co-host, and launched the show.

In November of 2014, ThePastCast was born. With the help of my friend Ben, we spent each episode focused on a specific pop culture topic from our time growing up. It was a way for us to revisit our lives, share our nostalgia in a healthy way, and it gave us a creative outlet.

Two years and over a hundred episodes later, we decided to retire the show. We both felt that we had said all that we wanted and the show had run its course. I am incredibly proud of ThePastCast. It covered books, movies, music, toys, and everything in between. Some episodes were fun, some episodes were personal, and others touched on deeper questions about art and society. The show may be over, but the archives are still up for anyone who wants to listen. If you grew up in the 80s, 90s, or early 2000s, then you are bound to find some common ground with us and our memories.
